Rapport de Match
The Indomitable Lions have defeated Guinea Bissau (2-0) on the first day of CAN 2019’s group stage. Yaya Banana and Stephane Bahoken each scored for Cameroon.
It was a good showing for the Indomitable Lions during their first outing at this CAN tournament. Cameroon manager Clarence Seedorf’s squad eventually dominated Guinea Bissau but started slow in the first fifteen minutes of play with timid, imprecise passes and rough play. This allowed the Guinea Bissau striker Piqueti to make some forays towards goal, and on a free kick in the 9th minute he placed a shot that landed safely in the arms of goalkeeper Andre Onana.
This Guinean attack eventually gave way to domination by Cameroon’s squad. With Zambo Anguissa in good form, distributing balls in behind the Bissau-Guinean defense, Cameroon saw several opportunities but could not take advantage and score. Christian Bassogog missed two golden opportunities in the first period. The two teams went into halftime with nothing to separate them (0-0).
In the second half, the Lions continued to dominate without scoring. But the decider soon arrived and in the 66th minute, Yaya Banana rose higher than everyone else in the middle of the box to head in a well-placed corner by Karl Toko. That opened the scoring for Cameroon (1-0).
After conceding their first goal, the Bissau-Guineans soaked up increasing pressure. To take further advantage, Seedorf aimed to finish his Bissau-Guinean counterpart Baciro Cande by substituting two attackers. First Clinton Njie to further test the opposing defense. Then Stéphane Bahoken entered the match, and before long, the Cameroon striker took advantage of a favorable counter to beat the Guinean goalkeeper Jonas Asvedo at close range (2-0). The encounter ended with even more intense pressure from the Cameroonians with the entry of Olivier Boumal, who further stretched the defense with his strides.
In the end, Zambo Anguissa was chosen as man of the match. The Cameroonian midfielder was particularly effective, demonstrating crisp passes and effective defending from box to box.
